Bangkok Thailand is a big, bustling city where your senses will be overloaded with vibrant sights, sounds and aromas. It is both exotic and familiar. The city is easy to get around, with a lively eating and drinking scene, and suitable for budget and luxury travellers alike.
When visiting any new city the options can be endless and sometimes overwhelming. It’s hard to know which museum to visit, which restaurant to have dinner at and where to get a coffee. To make your decision making simpler, see below a guide to the one place to visit.
Museum
Jim Thompson House Museum
The Jim Thompson House Museum is a must-visit for history, art and architecture enthusiasts. This Thai colonial-style home, once belonging to American businessman Jim Thompson who popularised Thai silk in the mid-20th century, is now a museum open to the public. Situated by a serene canal, the house is adorned with antiques, artwork, and religious artefacts, all set within beautiful gardens.
After your tour, don't miss the high-quality gift shop offering silk ties, scarves, and other souvenirs. The on-site restaurant and tea room provide a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a meal.
Temple
Wat Phra Temple
No visit to Bangkok is complete without exploring its stunning Buddhist temples. Wat Phra Temple, renowned for its monumental gold reclining Buddha, is a highlight that will leave you in awe. This temple provides a deep insight into the local religion and is a serene spot amidst the city's hustle and bustle.
Restaurant
Thai Niyom Cuisine
A Michelin star restaurant with a casual and modern atmosphere. Thai Niyom Cuisine is a wonderful spot for dinner to try some less common Thai dishes. We tried the fluffy omelette, Thai sausage and fresh vegetables, among other dishes, all bursting with flavour. The drinks were equally impressive. It was our favourite meal in Bangkok, and notably, we were the only tourists there, a testament to its local popularity.
Bar
Sugar Ray, You've Just Been Poisoned
While Bangkok is renowned for its rooftop bars, Sugar Ray, You've Just Been Poisoned, is a hidden gem worth seeking out. Nestled at the bottom of an office building, this intriguingly named bar offers expert creative cocktails with a Thai twist alongside outstanding versions of the classics. The friendly and knowledgeable staff are passionate about their craft. Located in a central but non-touristy part of the city, it's a great place to mingle with locals.
Cafe
The Coffee Academics
The Coffee Academics is a modern third-wave coffee cafe known for its passion, attention to detail, and top-quality coffee. Originally from Hong Kong, it now has branches across Southeast Asia, including several in central Bangkok. This cafe offers a relaxing atmosphere with sleek design and air conditioning, making it an ideal spot for a break. After enjoying your coffee, take a stroll in the nearby park.
Hotel
Hotel Muse
The Hotel Muse is luxurious but not stuffy, in a central Bangkok location. The staff are attentive. The rooms are elegantly decorated, quiet and comfortable. There is a tranquil rooftop pool and bar to relax and refresh after a day exploring the city.
Bangkok is a city that never ceases to amaze with its rich culture, vibrant nightlife, and culinary delights. Whether you're visiting for the first time or returning for another adventure, these recommendations will help you make the most of your trip.
